Playground Project
In 2008 the dream of having a playground in Temple Terrace where all children regardless of abilities could play together was born. Discussions began with City staff to explore opportunities where such a playground could exist. In February 2010, City Council took action agreeing that such a partnership was needed. Two sites have been designated as ideal sites for the new playgrounds.
The first playground is at Riverhills Park. Serving as the playground on weekdays for the students at Riverhills Elementary this playground is also a community park for the surrounding area in the evenings and on the weekends. Major community events such as the Annual Community Arts Festival are held at Riverhills Park.
The other playground is located adjacent to the Omar K. Lightfoot Recreation Center. This smaller playground meets the needs of nearby residents and visitors to the Lightfoot Center as well. Even from the Lightfoot Center beginnings, community support has been a major component of its success. With renovations to the Lightfoot Center completed last year, there has always been strong support from community and civic groups seeking to proivde the best for the residents of Temple Terrace. Started from the initial construction in the 1960’s to a utility bill drive for repairs and fresh paint in the 1980’s to community garage sales which funded the playground equipment that is there today, community participation has brought something Temple Terrace is proud of.
With such great facilities in our City, Clouds of Hope endeavors to raise the bar in providing the best playground atmosphere where children of all abilities can play together!
This spring, we will be holding our 3rd annual fundraiser for the primary purpose of raising funds to bring community inclusive playgrounds to Temple Terrace: playgrounds where children with limited abilities can play side-by-side with their fully abled siblings. As a member of the Temple Terrace Chamber, we are asking other local business to join with us in raising money and support to bring this dream to reality.
Working with the Freedom Playground Foundation and Hardeman-Kempton and Associates, designs have been finazlied for the playground at Riverhills Park. With renovations already planned for this playground, Clouds of Hope is joining in on a partnership that already exists between the City and the School Board to not only replace the equipment which exists, but to expand the possibilities and opportunities for citizens in Temple Terrace.
Will you join us? We’re asking for local businesses and corporations to join us in funding a playground where all children can play. For information about becoming a corporate sponsor, download and read through our partner sponsor letter.
We’ve also developed opportunities for families and individuals to play a part in bringing this dream to reality. Stay tuned as we bring you details about how your family can leave a lasting impact on the Temple Terrace community.
